Why Was Ex-Premier League Referee David Coote Banned by UEFA?

David Coote: Why Was Ex-Premier League Referee Banned?

Former Premier League referee David Coote has been handed a year-long ban from officiating UEFA matches. The ban, effective until June 30, 2026, stems from an ethics investigation conducted by UEFA following the circulation of a video allegedly depicting Coote snorting white powder during the 2024 European Championships.

This latest sanction follows Coote’s dismissal from the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) in December after a video surfaced showing him criticizing Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp. Coote opted not to appeal his PGMOL sacking. UEFA’s investigation found Coote guilty of violating basic principles of conduct, bringing the sport of football, and UEFA in particular, into disrepute.

In response to the controversies, Coote released a statement expressing remorse and acknowledging his actions fell below expected standards. “This has been one of the most difficult periods of my life,” he stated, apologizing for the negative attention brought upon the sport. He attributed his behavior to “private moments taken during very low times” and emphasized his focus on prioritizing his mental health and wellbeing.

Coote’s troubles extend beyond the UEFA ban. He is also under investigation by the Football Association (FA) regarding alleged betting irregularities during a 2019 Championship match between Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion. It is alleged that Coote discussed booking Leeds player Ezgjan Alioski with a fan online prior to the match, a claim he denies.

PGMOL’s statement regarding Coote’s dismissal highlighted a “serious breach” of his employment contract, deeming his position “untenable.” Despite the termination, PGMOL reiterated their commitment to Coote’s welfare.

During his career, David Coote officiated 112 Premier League games and 143 Championship matches. He also served as the referee for the 2023 Carabao Cup final between Manchester United and Newcastle United. The year-long UEFA ban effectively ends Coote’s officiating career at the highest levels of European football.
