West Ham United has entered the race to sign former German international Mats Hummels. Initially, Bologna seemed to be leading after RCD Mallorca withdrew their interest.
However, Hummels’ delay in committing to Bologna led the Italian club to retract their offer, creating an opening for other teams.
Brighton & Hove Albion has shown strong interest, with new head coach Fabian Hürzeler reportedly discussing the club’s ambitions with Hummels. Despite Brighton’s efforts, West Ham is keen to add the experienced 35-year-old defender to their squad, seeking to bolster their backline with his veteran presence. This sets up a potential battle between the two Premier League clubs for Hummels’ signature.

Hummels has only played for two clubs in his career – Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund – spending 13 seasons with the latter and making 508 appearances for the Black and Yellow. During his first spell at Dortmund, he won the Bundesliga twice under Jurgen Klopp and reached a Champions League final in 2012-13 before moving to Bayern in 2016. He rejoined Dortmund in 2019.
Reflecting on his time at Dortmund, Hummels has spoken highly of his experience, calling it “very special.” He witnessed the club’s transformation from mid-table strugglers to one of the Bundesliga’s top sides, making his tenure at the club particularly memorable.
