Former Chairman of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), J.Y. Appiah has strongly criticized Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku, stating he doesn’t deserve a third term due to an “unimpressive tenure.”
In an interview on Sporty FM, Appiah expressed disappointment with Okraku’s leadership, citing Ghana’s inconsistent international performances as a key indicator. “Kurt Okraku has not impressed at all; he does not deserve a third term in office as the FA boss,” he said.
While the Black Stars have experienced both successes and setbacks under Okraku, Appiah believes his overall tenure has been unsuccessful.
Since Okraku took office in 2019, Ghana’s national team has seen both highs and lows. They qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar after missing the 2018 edition, but their campaign ended disappointingly with a group stage exit.
The Black Stars also had a disastrous 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon, failing to progress past the group stage for the first time in decades. Hopes for redemption at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast were dashed with another early exit. Furthermore, under Okraku, Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, the first time they have missed the tournament since 2004.
Okraku began his first term in 2019 and was re-elected unopposed on October 5, 2023. His current term runs until 2027.
Gone are the days when the Black Stars were a powerhouse in African football. Under Kurt Okraku’s administration, the entire football fraternity has witnessed more failures than successes As Okraku’s current term nears its end, debates over the future of Ghana football’s leadership continue to intensify.
