Taylor Fritz has finally broken his streak of Grand Slam quarter-final disappointments by defeating Alexander Zverev to secure a place in the semi-finals of the US Open.
The 12th-seeded American triumphed over the 2020 runner-up with a scoreline of 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
Fritz celebrated joyfully as Zverev sent the final ball wide, raising his arms to acknowledge the cheering crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
This victory marks a significant milestone for Fritz, who had previously lost all four of his matches at this stage of a major tournament.
With this win, Taylor Fritz keeps alive his hopes of becoming the first American men’s singles champion at Flushing Meadows since Andy Roddick in 2003.

“Today just felt different,” said the 26-year-old. “I really felt like it was my time to go a step further. It’s only fitting I’m doing it here on this court, at the Open, in front of this crowd.”
Fritz is now set to face another American, Frances Tiafoe, in the semi-finals, provided Tiafoe defeats Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in their quarter-final match scheduled for Tuesday night.
Fritz’s victory follows the success of New Yorker Emma Navarro, who also reached the semi-finals in the women’s singles after defeating Paula Badosa.
