Coco Gauff’s performance on Wimbledon’s Court One was far from impressive on Wednesday, as she labored to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Romanian qualifier Anca Todoni. The 20-year-old US Open champion looked out of sorts, committing 16 unforced errors and struggling with her serve, landing only 43% of her first serves.
Despite her less-than-dominant display, Gauff was able to capitalize on her opponent’s mistakes, as Todoni hit 23 unforced errors. Gauff’s fleet-footedness and experience ultimately proved too much for the 19-year-old Romanian, who was making her Wimbledon debut.
Gauff’s post-match interview revealed a sense of relief rather than triumph, as she acknowledged her imperfections and the pressure that comes with being a high-seeded player. “I do think I could have played cleaner at some points, but overall I’m happy to have got through to the third round,” she said.
The American’s struggles on the court were evident, as she slipped and fell twice on the slick surface. Her frustration was palpable, as she muttered to herself during the match. However, Gauff’s experience and maturity ultimately helped her to manage her emotions and secure the win.
The draw has opened up for Gauff, following the withdrawals of top players Aryna Sabalenka and Victoria Azarenka. However, her next match against either British qualifier Sonay Kartel or France’s Clara Burel will be a test of her ability to overcome her current struggles and find her form. Can Gauff regain her footing and make a deep run in the tournament, or will her imperfections prove to be her downfall? Only time will tell.
