Spain captured the Olympic men’s football gold medal at Paris 2024 in a dramatic final against France, who staged a remarkable comeback but ultimately fell short.
The match was a rollercoaster of emotions, with Spain initially falling behind 1-0 early in the game. By half-time, they had surged ahead with a 3-1 lead. France, however, mounted a stunning comeback in the second half, leveling the score and sending the match into extra time.
In the crucial moments of extra time, Spain’s substitute Sergio Camello emerged as the hero, scoring twice to secure a 5-3 victory.
Camello’s goals were met with ecstatic celebrations from the Spanish team, who were crowned Olympic champions for the first time since 1992.

This victory adds to Spain’s impressive recent achievements, following their triumph in the men’s European Championship and the men’s under-19 European title, as well as the women’s team’s World Cup win last year.
For France, the final was a heartbreaking end, despite a valiant effort to claw back from a deficit. Thierry Henry consoled his players as they grappled with the disappointment of finishing as runners-up.
The result means Spain’s victory contributes to their growing tally of 14 gold medals at the Paris 2024 Games, placing them alongside Japan and Great Britain, who also have 14 golds. Team GB leads overall with 57 medals, just ahead of France.
