English Premier League club Southampton has strengthened its midfield with the signing of Portuguese talent Mateus Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon.
The 20-year-old central midfielder joins the Saints on a five-year deal for a fee believed to be around £15 million.
Fernandes, a product of Sporting’s youth academy, has made five appearances for the first team and spent last season on loan at Estoril. During his time at Estoril, he impressed with his performances, making 35 appearances across all competitions and contributing one goal and three assists.
“I’m very happy to be here – it’s a dream come true to come to England and play in the Premier League,” Mateus Fernandes expressed upon his arrival. “It’s the best league in the world, in my opinion. It has the best coaches, the best players, the best teams. It’s good for me, for my growth and I’m happy.”
Southampton manager Russell Martin echoed the club’s excitement about the signing, highlighting Fernandes’ key attributes that will contribute to the team’s success in the Premier League. “Mateus is a player we have been monitoring for a while and someone we are really excited about,” Martin said.
Fernandes’ arrival adds depth and quality to Southampton’s midfield options. The club will be looking to build on his potential and integrate him seamlessly into the team.
Southampton’s next Premier League fixture is against Nottingham Forest on August 24, where Fernandes could potentially make his debut for the Saints.
