Cristiano Ronaldo’s late strike secured Portugal a 2-1 victory over Scotland in a thrilling Nations League clash, marking the 901st goal of the legendary striker’s illustrious career.
The match took place on Sunday, with Ronaldo coming off the bench to complete a stirring comeback for his team.
Having reached the milestone of 900 career goals with his 131st international strike in Portugal’s previous victory over Croatia, the 39-year-old showed no signs of slowing down.
The Estadio da Luz erupted in cheers as Ronaldo found the net with just two minutes remaining, lifting Portugal to their second consecutive win in Nations League Group A1.
Scotland initially took the lead in the seventh minute when Scott McTominay headed home a superb cross from Kenny McLean.
However, Portugal responded strongly in the second half, with Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes equalizing shortly after the break. Fernandes capitalized on a mistake by Scotland’s goalkeeper, Angus Gunn, who failed to properly save a long-range shot.

Ronaldo’s impact was felt immediately after his introduction, as he created several chances for his teammates. His decisive goal came in the 88th minute when he tapped in a cross from Nuno Mendes, sealing the win for Portugal.
Despite the defeat, Scotland has struggled recently, winning only once in their last 14 matches. The loss adds to the pressure on head coach Steve Clarke, as the Tartan Army looks to improve their fortunes after a disappointing performance in Euro 2024.
Portugal’s victory keeps them in contention for top honors in the Nations League, with Ronaldo continuing to defy age and critics alike as he adds to his remarkable goal tally.
