Riccardo Calafiori seals £42m move to Arsenal

Arsenal have completed the signing of Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna for a fee of up to £42 million, including add-ons.

The 22-year-old has penned a five-year contract with Mikel Arteta’s side and has immediately joined his new teammates in Philadelphia.

“I’m really happy to be here,” Calafiori said. “I waited a lot. I hope we are going to do something great this season.”

Calafiori, who played a key role in Italy’s Euro 2024 campaign, can operate as a central defender or left-back, and has also played on the left wing.

He made 30 Serie A appearances for Bologna last season, scoring twice and providing five assists, helping the club secure a Champions League spot by finishing fifth.

Arteta praised Calafiori as a “great signing” and highlighted his strong character and specific skills that will strengthen the squad.

“Riccardo is a big personality and character, with specific skills which will make us stronger as we push to win major trophies,” Arteta said. “His development over recent seasons, with both Bologna and Italy, has been really impressive.”

Arsenal are excited to integrate Riccardo Calafiori into their squad and support him as they aim for success in the upcoming season.
