Frederick Acheampong, Executive Council Member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has revealed that the GFA chose not to renew its broadcast deal with StarTimes due to an outstanding debt of nearly $1 million owed by the Chinese media company.
The contract between the GFA and StarTimes ended at the conclusion of the previous football season, and negotiations to extend the partnership were unsuccessful. As a result, the GFA has awarded the broadcasting rights to several local free-to-air TV stations for the new season.

Acheampong disclosed that the GFA had to secure alternative funding to pay clubs, compensating them for the money they were supposed to receive from StarTimes.
“StarTimes owes the Ghana Football Association close to 1 million dollars. The GFA had to find money from different avenues to settle the clubs with the StarTimes money that the clubs were supposed to receive.
“This is the reason why we could not continue with StarTimes,” Acheampong explained during an interview with Kessben TV.
However, the first round of matches aired under the new arrangement has drawn widespread criticism due to poor broadcast quality.
