Novak Djokovic has kicked off his bid for a historic 25th Grand Slam singles title with a commanding victory over Radu Albot in the first round of the US Open.
The Serbian tennis star, currently tied with Margaret Court for the most major singles titles at 24, defeated Albot 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 in a match that showcased his dominance.
Djokovic, 37, entered the tournament fresh off a remarkable achievement, having won Olympic gold in Paris just 23 days prior, which he described as his “biggest sporting achievement.”
However, despite his extensive list of accolades, Djokovic is still on the hunt for his first Grand Slam title of 2024, aiming to continue his streak of winning at least one major every year since 2017.

In a light-hearted moment before the match, Djokovic mentioned his desire to “avenge” his younger brothers, Djordje and Marko, who both previously lost to Moldova’s Albot.
“I feel like there was so much at stake – I feel like there was revenge for my younger brothers,” Djokovic quipped to ESPN after the match.
Djokovic, who had never faced Albot before, will now face fellow Serbian Laslo Djere in the second round on Wednesday as he continues his pursuit of tennis history.
