Michael Essien Remains Content in Behind-the-Scenes Coaching Roles

Former Chelsea and Ghanaian Legend Michael Essien has dismissed becoming a head coach for now, preferring to remain behind the scenes.

The 41-year-old, who was recently linked to the Ghana national team coach job before Otto Addo’s reappointment, disclosed his aversion to the media spotlight and the pressures associated with the top job.

“For now, I am not thinking about being a head coach; it is too stressful,” Essien told Joy Sports. “I like to be behind the scenes, away from these media duties and cameras in my face. But you never know; maybe at some point.”

Michael Essien retired from professional football in 2020 after an illustrious career that saw him represent clubs like Lyon, Chelsea, Real Madrid, and AC Milan. He made a significant impact on the field, scoring 67 goals and providing 27 assists in 603 appearances across all competitions for club and country.

Following his retirement, Essien joined the coaching staff of Danish Super Lig side FC Nordsjaelland. The former Ghanaian international has been impressed by the organization at Nordsjaelland, stating, “I’ve been to many places, top clubs and everything, but the Nordsjaelland organization is second to none.”

While Michael Essien may not be ready to take on the demanding role of a head coach at present, his experience and knowledge of the game make him a valuable asset to any coaching staff. It remains to be seen if he will change his mind in the future and decide to step into the spotlight as a manager.
