Mason Greenwood Focuses on Future with Marseille Amid Controversial Past

In his inaugural press conference as a Marseille player, English striker Mason Greenwood (22) demonstrated a resolute focus on the future, sidestepping questions about the controversy surrounding his arrival at the French club. The transfer, which has sparked significant debate among fans and local officials, marks a new chapter in Greenwood’s career following a tumultuous period.

Greenwood’s career trajectory took a dramatic turn in January 2022 when he was suspended by Manchester United amid serious allegations. However, in February 2023, prosecutors dropped the charges, paving the way for his return to professional football. His subsequent loan spell at Getafe in Spain’s LaLiga saw him net 10 goals and provide six assists in 36 appearances, showcasing his on-field potential.

When pressed about the uproar surrounding his signing, Greenwood maintained a forward-looking stance. “I understand the question, but I don’t really want to get into any conversations or any discussions about that,” he stated. “I’d only like to look forward and to be part of Marseille and just to move forward with myself, my family, my daughter and my partner and the whole club and to focus on the football and the off-field work with my family.”

Marseille’s decision to acquire Greenwood for a reported €30 million ($32.7m) has not been without its critics. The club’s president, Pablo Longoria, acknowledged the complexity of the situation while emphasizing the need to focus on the present and future. “I’m the first to understand that Mason’s arrival raises a lot of questions,” Longoria said. “But we’re talking about the past. It’s a complex situation and an old situation.”

Greenwood expressed contentment with his personal life during his time in Madrid, highlighting the positive experience for his family. As he settles into life in Marseille, the striker is eager to contribute on the pitch, potentially making his debut in a friendly against Nimes on Sunday. “On the right is my preferred position, but it’s up to the coach to pick me in whatever position and I’ll give 100 percent in every single game,” Greenwood affirmed.

When asked about the possibility of an international recall, Greenwood, who has one cap for England, chose to maintain his focus on club football for the upcoming season. His arrival at Marseille coincides with the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the club’s top scorer from the previous season, who has moved to Saudi Arabia.

As Marseille navigates the aftermath of this controversial signing, the club and its new striker face the challenge of balancing on-field performance with off-field scrutiny. Greenwood’s determination to contribute positively to his new team will be closely watched by fans, critics, and football observers alike in the coming months.

The success of this transfer, both for Greenwood and Marseille, will likely hinge on the player’s ability to deliver on the pitch while navigating the complexities of his public image off it. As the new season approaches, all eyes will be on how this high-profile and contentious move unfolds in the context of French and European football.
