Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has vehemently defended Marcus Rashford’s early-season form, dismissing criticism as “stupid.”
Rashford has faced scrutiny after missing several chances in the Community Shield defeat to Manchester City and being substituted early in the 2-1 loss to Brighton. Former England striker Alan Shearer was particularly critical of Rashford’s performance at the Amex Stadium.
However, ten Hag insists that he is pleased with the forward’s contributions. “Everyone gets criticism, regardless of whether we’re winning or losing,” the manager said. “I was very happy with Rashy’s performances in preseason, against Fulham, and against Brighton.”
Ten Hag emphasized that Rashford’s substitution was due to rotational changes and not a reflection of his performance. “We have good players on the bench who bring new energy,” he explained. “There will be rotation, and if a player isn’t performing, it can be a factor, but it definitely wasn’t in this case.”
Meanwhile, Manchester United will be without Scott McTominay for their upcoming league match against Liverpool on September 1st. The Scotland international is set to join Napoli, and ten Hag admitted that he is disappointed to see him leave.
“I’m happy for him, but it’s mixed because I wouldn’t prefer to lose him,” ten Hag said. “He’s Man United through and through. He was so important for us, but unfortunately, the rules dictate otherwise.”
