Manchester United delivered a dominant performance as they stormed into the EFL Cup last-16 with their biggest win under Erik ten Hag, dismantling League One side Barnsley in a 7-0 rout.
Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and veteran midfielder Christian Eriksen each netted twice, while Brazilian winger Antony converted a first-half penalty to round off the scoring. The victory marks United’s most emphatic triumph since their 9-0 thrashing of Southampton in February 2021.
United hadn’t previously scored five goals under Ten Hag, making this an exceptional night for the Dutchman. “For the team, this is the perfect night,” said Ten Hag.
“We did everything we planned, won to reach the next round, scored some great goals, entertained the fans, and worked on our game model, so we are happy.”
Barnsley, managed by Darrell Clarke, were outclassed throughout the match despite their fans’ unwavering support. Their best moment came in the first half when Clarke himself displayed impressive skill, controlling a ball fizzed towards the touchline after the whistle. Even the home fans applauded.

The game also saw the first start for United’s £50.5 million signing, Manuel Ugarte. The Uruguayan midfielder showed composure and promise, giving Ten Hag confidence that his squad is nearing the completion he envisioned since joining from Ajax in 2022.
However, Ten Hag remains grounded, saying, “I was not devastated after Liverpool, and I am not celebrating now. We will see where we are in May because then we have to be good.”
