Lee Carsley Backs England for 2026 FIFA World Cup Glory

England

Outgoing interim England manager Lee Carsley is optimistic about the Three Lions’ chances at the 2026 World Cup under Thomas Tuchel, who begins his 18-month tenure on 1 January 2025.

“I think we’re in a really good position to do that,” Carsley stated. “We’ve got the talent, the tools, we just need to utilize them correctly.”

Carsley, who oversaw a successful interim period, introduced eight new players to the international stage, including Liverpool’s Curtis Jones and Southampton’s Taylor Harwood-Bellis. He believes he’s left the squad in a strong position for Tuchel.

“Thomas has a larger pool of players to choose from, so we’ve left the squad in a fantastic position,” Carsley said. “I’ve been fortunate to be involved in the last few World Cups, and the timing of player form, both physically and mentally, is crucial.”

While Carsley is unsure of the exact timing of his handover with Tuchel, he emphasized the importance of a smooth transition. “The sooner we can connect and discuss the players, the better,” he said. “We’ll compile our observations and insights to provide him with valuable information, and then we’ll step back to support him.”

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford echoed Carsley’s sentiments, highlighting the increased competition for places within the squad. “There’s a new energy around the team, and that’s leading to a lot of competition for places,” Pickford said. “That’s exactly what we need. We want the best players representing England at the right time, and hopefully, next year, we’ll have a squad ready to win.”

Meanwhile, England captain Harry Kane has hinted that the 2026 FIFA World Cup may not be his last international tournament. “I think there’s a perception when you get to your 30s that you’re coming to an end, but for me I’m performing at the highest level I’ve ever performed and feel as good as I’ve ever felt, so it’s about taking in the moment,” Kane said.

“I don’t like to look too far ahead and in my career, I never have, the [2026] World Cup is going to be exciting. In America it will be an incredible occasion and ultimately it’s about trying to win that, looking at where you are, where to improve and it will be no different in a couple of years.”

Harry Kane is England’s all-time top scorer with 69 goals in 103 appearances.
