Lee Carsley has been named as the interim manager of the England men’s football team.
The 50-year-old, who previously managed England’s Under-21s, steps up following Gareth Southgate’s departure after England’s Euro 2024 final loss to Spain.
Carsley led the Under-21s to victory in the European Championship last July, with a 1-0 win over Spain in the final. Despite being born in Birmingham, he represented the Republic of Ireland during his playing career, which was influenced by his grandmother from County Cork.
Carsley had previously turned down an offer to manage the Republic of Ireland national team in March.

In his new role, Carsley aims to provide continuity and oversee the team while the Football Association searches for a permanent replacement. His immediate focus will be on England’s upcoming Nations League matches against Ireland and Finland next month.
Lee Carsley will announce his first England squad on August 29. His appointment represents a significant moment as he takes on the challenge of leading England during a transitional period.
