Atletico Madrid have completed the signing of Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez in a record-breaking £81.5m transfer deal.
The 24-year-old Argentine has agreed to a six-year contract with the Spanish side.
The transfer includes an initial fee of £64.4m (75 million euros), with an additional £17.1m (20 million euros) in potential add-ons. This deal surpasses Manchester City’s previous record sale, the £50m transfer of Raheem Sterling to Chelsea in 2022.
Alvarez’s move marks a significant departure for City, who initially acquired the striker from River Plate for £14.1m in January 2022. During his two-year stint with City, Alvarez won six major trophies, including the Premier League and the Champions League.

Reflecting on his time at City, Alvarez expressed his gratitude and emotional farewell: “Today I say goodbye to this amazing club, with a lot of emotion. These have been two very special years. During this time, I have grown and learnt a lot – both as a player and as a person.”
Atletico Madrid’s acquisition of Alvarez, a versatile and dynamic forward, is expected to strengthen their squad significantly as they aim to compete for top honors in La Liga and European competitions.
