Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has opened up about the crucial conversation he had with shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe before committing his future to the club.
The Portuguese midfielder, who had previously expressed uncertainty about his long-term stay at Old Trafford, has now signed a new three-year contract.
Fernandes’ decision to stay was influenced by his desire to see the club make substantial strides and compete at the highest level. In an interview with the club’s website, he revealed that he had asked the club to ensure that they would have a competitive team capable of challenging for silverware.
“I don’t need you to promise me that we’re going to win the league,” Bruno Fernandes stated. “But at least that we will have a team to compete and be competitive through the season.”
The arrival of new co-owners INEOS has brought a wave of positive change to Manchester United. The club has been active in the transfer market, bringing in several talented players including Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, and Noussair Mazraoui. Bruno Fernandes expressed his satisfaction with the club’s progress and emphasized his belief that they are moving in the right direction.
“I think the club is doing that,” Fernandes said. “It’s trying to bring people in to get more players with quality in the team; to get more competitive, [so everyone is] fighting for your place.”
Fernandes’ decision to stay at Manchester United is a significant boost for the club. His leadership and attacking prowess have been instrumental in recent years, and his continued presence will be crucial as the Red Devils aim to return to the top of English football.
Manchester United will next face Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, August 24th in their Premier League match.
