‘I’m sorry’ – Agyemang-Badu regrets backing Otto Addo’s second stint

Former Ghana midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has expressed regret over his previous support for Otto Addo’s second stint as head coach of the Black Stars.

After Ghana’s disappointing 2-0 defeat to Sudan in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, Agyemang-Badu admitted he had been wrong to advocate for Addo’s return.

Addo, who previously led the Black Stars to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, stepped down after the tournament but was rehired earlier this year following the dismissal of Chris Hughton.

However, under his leadership, Ghana has continued to struggle, and their latest loss has left them third in Group F with just two points, putting their AFCON qualification hopes in serious jeopardy.

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Onua FM, Agyemang-Badu apologised for backing Addo’s reappointment, acknowledging that the coaching role may be too challenging for the former Borussia Dortmund assistant.

“I apologise because I advocated for the second coming of coach Otto Addo. If you go into my interviews, I gave him massive support, but I’m sorry,” Agyemang-Badu said. “It seems the task is beyond him.”

Despite being rehired on a 34-month deal earlier this year, Otto Addo has faced mounting pressure due to the Black Stars’ poor performances.

Ghana now faces a critical challenge in their final two qualifiers against Niger and Angola, while hoping that Sudan falters in their remaining games to stand a chance of qualifying for the tournament in Morocco next year.
