Herve Renard has emerged as a leading candidate for the vacant Nigeria coaching role following the resignation of Finidi George.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is actively seeking a capable replacement after George stepped down due to poor results in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers this month.
Freekick Sports understands that, Renard, who is set to leave his position as head coach of the French women’s national team after the Paris Olympics 2024, has become a prime target for the NFF. The 55-year-old French coach has expressed his desire to return to Africa, and officials are reportedly pursuing a deal to bring him to Nigeria.
Renard boasts a remarkable track record in African football, having led Zambia to victory at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2012 and repeating the feat with Ivory Coast in 2015. His experience and success on the continent make him an appealing candidate for the Super Eagles.

The 55-year-old coach confirmed his departure from France’s women’s national team after the Olympic Games, as reported by GOAL. Renard succeeded Corinne Diacre in March last year and led Les Bleues to the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand only a few months later.
Nigeria face competition for Herve Renard
Nigeria is one of several countries interested in Renard, with South Korea and Algeria also reportedly eyeing him for their national teams.
Herve Renard was previously linked with the Super Eagles earlier this year after the departure of Jose Peseiro as Nigeria’s coach following the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. However, Finidi George was appointed by the NFF for the role, though his tenure lasted less than a month due to two poor results that led to his resignation.
As the NFF continues its search for a new coach, Renard’s impressive credentials and familiarity with African football make him a strong contender for the Super Eagles’ top job. Further developments are anticipated as the federation aims to secure his services and revitalize the national team’s prospects.
