Willie Williams Championship 2025: Ghana's Top Athletes to Shine

The seventh edition of the Willie Williams Athletics Championship, one of Ghana’s oldest athletics competitions, will take place on February 8, 2025. The event will be held at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Accra, running from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.

Conceived by former athlete James Thompson, who was mentored by the late Willie Williams, this competition has a history of discovering talented athletes.  Notable examples include Benjamin Azamati, the current national 100m record holder, who won the inaugural 100m race in 2018.  Other past winners, such as Solomon Hammond (2nd edition), Rasheed Saminu, and James Dadzie (3rd edition). These Athletes are now based in the USA and currently represent Ghana in the 4x100m relay team.

According to James Thompson , organizer of the Willie Williams Athletics Championship, several athletics clubs have registered for the competition.  These include the current SWAG Male Athlete of the Year, Edwin Gadayi; 2020 Olympian Sarfo Ansah; the Ghana Armed Forces team; a team from the Ashanti Region; the University of Ghana; and numerous individual athletes.

The Paa Willie Williams Athletics Meet is now a fixture on the Ghana Athletics calendar and is the first competition of the year.  Thompson has confirmed that electronic timing and all necessary facilities and equipment will be available to ensure athletes can record their best times.

GAA announces team for CAA Region II Athletics Championship

The Ghana Athletics Association has announced athletes who will represent Ghana in the CAA Region II Athletics Championship. The championship
