Ghanaian Football Icon Awudu Issaka: More Than Just a Disco Dancer

Awudu Issaka, the Ghanaian midfielder famously dubbed the ‘Disco Dancer’ for his mesmerizing dribbling skills, has carved a remarkable journey from a promising young talent to a dedicated football mentor.

Hailing from Sunyani, Issaka’s footballing odyssey began in the youth ranks of Asante Kotoko before he made a significant impact at Prampram Mighty Royals FC at the tender age of fifteen.

His exceptional abilities caught the attention of European scouts, leading to stints at R.S.C. Anderlecht, AJ Auxerre, and TSV 1860 Munich. Despite his talent, Issaka’s career took an unexpected turn, bringing him back to his roots at Prampram Mighty Royals and subsequently Liberty Professionals. His final professional chapter unfolded at Ghana’s Tema Youth before his retirement in 2011.

Issaka’s international career was equally impressive. He represented Ghana at the U17, U20, and senior national team levels. A standout achievement was winning the FIFA World Youth Championship with Ghana’s U17 team in 1995 in Ecuador. He also showcased his talent by leading Ghana’s U20 team to a fourth-place finish at the FIFA World Youth Championship in 1997 in Malaysia. His contributions to both club and country amounted to 76 appearances and 14 goals.

Recognizing the importance of nurturing young talent, Issaka established the Royal Awudu Issaka Soccer Academy in 2011. The academy is dedicated to identifying and developing underprivileged youngsters from rural areas, providing them with a platform to excel in both football and education. With a global outlook, the academy also caters to international players, fostering a diverse and competitive environment.

Awudu Issaka’s legacy extends beyond his playing days. Through his academy, he continues to inspire and empower young footballers, ensuring that the next generation of Ghanaian talent has the opportunity to shine on the world stage.
