Ghana Boxing Coach Explains Challenges Faced at Olympic Qualifiers

Ghana’s national boxing team coach, Dr. Ofori Asare has described the recent World Olympic Boxing Qualifiers in Thailand as a difficult tournament, particularly for African boxers.

Speaking to reporters at the Kotoka International Airport upon the team’s return, Dr. Asare expressed disappointment that no Ghanaian boxer qualified for the Olympics. He highlighted two key areas for improvement:

“We have to build on our capacity to work on coaches and officials. It is not only boxers who perform at that level, we need officials at the world level. We need exposure and more fights for our boxers, you could see boxers with over 100 fights record while our boxers have not fought more than ten. It is in deed painful but we have to keep on” he said.

Ghana sent seven boxers to Thailand, following previous attempts with 12 boxers in Dakar and Italy. Unfortunately, none of them secured Olympic qualification.
