GFA President Stands Firm on Management Committees’ Role

GFA President Stands Firm on Management Committees' Role

Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has staunchly defended the crucial role of management committees in the success of Ghana’s national football teams.

Speaking before the Parliamentary Select Committee on Ghana football matters, Okraku addressed mounting criticism regarding the committees’ effectiveness.

In response to concerns raised by football fans and pundits, Okraku emphasized that management committees are integral to the organization and operation of the national teams. He explained that the committees play a pivotal role in planning, coordination, and ensuring that the teams are adequately prepared for competitions.

“Management committees are not just names on paper,” Okraku stated. “They are actively involved in every aspect of the national teams’ operations. From planning training camps to securing match fixtures, they play a vital role in ensuring our teams’ success.”

Okraku also clarified that the Ghana FA does not receive any government funding for its operations. He stated that the Ministry of Youth and Sports is responsible for funding national team-related activities, including payments to players, coaches, and staff. This clarification aimed to address concerns about the use of taxpayer money for football-related expenses.

“For the record, the government of Ghana doesn’t give GFA any money,” Kurt Okraku said. “The Ministry of Youth and Sports funds national team-related activities. No money comes into the GFA’s coffers from the government.”

The GFA President’s appearance before the Parliamentary Select Committee followed a petition from the Save Ghana Football group. The group had expressed dissatisfaction with the Black Stars’ early exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and called for greater accountability regarding the funds received from the 2022 World Cup and the 2023 AFCON.

Okraku’s defense of management committees and his clarification regarding government funding are significant developments in the ongoing debate about the future of Ghanaian football. As the Parliamentary Select Committee continues its investigation, it remains to be seen whether the Ghana Football Association will be able to address the concerns raised by the Save Ghana Football group and other stakeholders.
