Farewell to a Goal-Scoring Legend: Justin Shonga

The Lusaka football community came together to bid a heartfelt farewell to former Chipolopolo star, Justin Shonga, who passed away on Sunday after a short illness. The memorial service at Arakan Barracks chapel was attended by hundreds of people from all walks of life, including football enthusiasts, former teammates, and officials from the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ).
FAZ general secretary, Reuben Kamanga, led the tributes, remembering Shonga as a “proven goal scorer” who was instrumental in Zambia’s qualification for the 2018 African Nations Championship in Morocco. His impressive performance caught the attention of Orlando Pirates, who signed him before the tournament.
Zambia Police representative, Adrian Kashala, praised Shonga for his exceptional talent that brought him into the national spotlight. Other notable attendees included Chipolopolo assistant coach, Moses Sichone, former national team coach, Wedson Nyirenda, and former goalkeeper trainer, Stephen Mwansa.
A military officer paying his last respect
Shonga’s body was airlifted to his hometown, Chipata, where he will be laid to rest on Thursday. The 27-year-old had played for several clubs, including Nijran SC in Saudi Arabia, Gagra in Georgia, Sekhukhune, Ismailia, Cape Town City, and Tshakhuma.
As the football community says goodbye to this talented player, they remember his impressive skills on the field and his contributions to Zambian football. Rest in peace, Justin Shonga. Your legacy will live on.
