Former Hearts of Oak defender Caleb Amankwah has called on Ghanaian football clubs to improve player salaries to retain talent and boost the competitiveness of the local leagues.
Amankwah, who joined Ethiopian club Commercial Bank FC after leaving Hearts of Oak in early 2023, emphasized that inadequate salaries are driving players out of Ghana. “If there is money in Ghana, we will stay and play in the Ghana Premier League,” Amankwah stated, as reported by Asempa FM and footballghana.com.
The former Aduana FC player highlighted that low wages are a significant factor behind the exodus of top players to leagues in Rwanda, Tanzania, and North Africa.
“If you have a key player and you allow him to leave, what benefit will you get? Which player will the supporter come to the stadium to watch?” Caleb Amankwah questioned.

He urged clubs and stakeholders to offer competitive salaries to ensure players remain in Ghana and contribute to the development of the domestic league. “They should give the players the money to stay and play in the Ghana Premier League,” he added.
Amankwah’s comments come amid a trend where many Ghanaian players are moving abroad in search of better financial opportunities, impacting the quality and popularity of the local football scene.
