Manchester United reserve goalkeeper, Tom Heaton, has been confirmed as a surprise addition to England’s Euro 2024 camp. The Three Lions are scheduled to arrive in Germany on Monday in preparation for their opening match against Serbia on June 16. Manager Gareth Southgate unveiled his 26-man squad last week, including three goalkeepers.
Despite only featuring in four of Manchester United’s Premier League matchday squads last season, Heaton has been welcomed as a training goalkeeper for the England squad. The 38-year-old expressed his honor at being called up by Southgate and praised the talent within the tournament squad.
Heaton, who has previously earned three caps for England, last appeared in a friendly victory against France in 2017. His previous inclusion in England’s Euro 2016 squad did not result in any playing time prior to the team’s unexpected exit in the round of 16 against Iceland.

Acknowledging Heaton’s role within the goalkeeping unit, Southgate emphasized the veteran’s experience and highlighted the support from Manchester United in facilitating his participation. Heaton’s return to Manchester United in 2021 has been marked by a lack of league appearances, prompting speculation about a potential coaching role following the expiry of his contract in June.
As the England squad regroups at St George’s Park ahead of their departure to Germany for Euro 2024, spirits remain high despite a recent defeat against Iceland. Stars such as Harry Kane and emerging talents like Jude Bellingham are ready to represent their country on the international stage.
The stage is set for England’s football heroes to showcase their skills and unity in the pursuit of Euro 2024 glory. With a blend of experience and fresh talent, the Three Lions are poised to make their mark on the continental stage.
