Conor Gallagher came off the bench for Atletico Madrid as they secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over RB Leipzig in their Champions League opener, thanks to a 90th-minute winner from José María Giménez.
RB Leipzig took an early lead in the fourth minute when Benjamin Šeško headed past Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak.
However, Antoine Griezmann equalised for the hosts in the 28th minute with a superb volley, marking his 37th Champions League goal.
Griezmann was Atletico’s standout player, and while he nearly grabbed a second goal, RB Leipzig keeper Peter Gulacsi pulled off a brilliant save to keep the game level.
The French star then delivered a pinpoint cross in the dying moments of the match, which Giménez headed into the net to secure the win.

Gallagher, who joined Atletico from Chelsea in a £33m move this summer, made his debut in the 63rd minute when the game was tied 1-1. He became the second English player to feature in the Champions League for Atletico, following in the footsteps of Kieran Trippier.
Atletico Madrid will next face Benfica away on October 2, while RB Leipzig host Juventus.
