Conor Gallagher, on loan to Atlético Madrid from Chelsea, is eagerly anticipating his first derby match against Real Madrid.
The English midfielder expressed his excitement and admiration for the vibrant atmosphere at the Metropolitano stadium, which he believes surpasses the noise levels he’s experienced in the Premier League.
“I’m really excited, I’m really enjoying my football right now,” Gallagher told ESPN. “It’s going to be a really special game… I feel very comfortable, very confident, I feel very settled and at home already.”
Gallagher, who has quickly become a fan favorite at Atlético with his impressive performances and two goals in five LaLiga appearances, emphasized his excitement for the upcoming clash. Both teams enter the derby unbeaten, with Real Madrid holding a slight two-point advantage in the league table.
The young Englishman praised the atmosphere at the Metropolitano, highlighting the passionate support from the fans and the intense energy that permeates the stadium. “Looking at the atmosphere, the games already, I think tomorrow’s going to be crazy. The atmosphere at our stadium is so good… I’d say it’s louder in Spain,” he said.
Atlético Madrid’s recent 1-0 victory over Celta Vigo, thanks to a late goal from Julián Álvarez, has boosted their confidence going into the derby. Gallagher expressed his admiration for Álvarez, describing him as a “cool guy” who has achieved significant success in his career.
While Real Madrid’s absence of Kylian Mbappé due to injury may provide a slight advantage for Atlético, Gallagher acknowledged the strength of Real Madrid’s squad and the numerous threats they pose. “Real are a top team, one of the best in the whole world,” he said. “We know how good they are, they have many threats, and we’ll prepare as much as we can to go at their weaknesses.”
Gallagher also praised his coach, Diego Simeone, for his exceptional management skills and the positive impact he has had on his development. Despite the language barrier, Gallagher expressed his willingness to learn Spanish and follow Simeone’s instructions. “It’s brilliant. He’s an amazing manager,” Gallagher said. “For me to work under him is a real honor… Whatever he wants me to do, I’ll do it.”
