Chelsea Football Club announced a unique tribute to star striker Sam Kerr following her contract extension until 2026. The iconic Stamford Bridge will be temporarily renamed “Samford Bridge” until Sunday, reflecting Kerr’s immense contribution to the team. This move coincides with the appointment of Sonia Bompastor as the new head coach, replacing Emma Hayes.
Kerr, currently recovering from an ACL injury, joined Chelsea in 2019 and has since been instrumental in their success. Her impressive record boasts five WSL titles, three FA Cups, and two League Cups. She’s also notched up a staggering 99 goals in just 128 appearances for the Blues.
The dedication extends beyond Stamford Bridge. Chelsea’s Kingsmeadow, their usual home ground for the women’s team, will be temporarily known as “Kerrsmeadow” for the same period.
Chelsea general manager Paul Green expressed his delight at Kerr’s contract renewal: “Sam is a leader and one of the world’s best strikers. Her impact on the team’s success is undeniable, and we eagerly await her return to the pitch next season.”
This creative gesture highlights Chelsea’s commitment to women’s football and celebrates Kerr’s exceptional talent. It’s a symbolic way to kick off the new era under Coach Bompastor, with Kerr undoubtedly remaining a key player for the Blues.
