Cameroon and Nigeria both recorded impressive victories in their opening matches of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifiers.

Cameroon defeated Namibia 1-0 in Garoua, thanks to a goal from Vincent Aboubakar. The Indomitable Lions dominated possession but struggled to break down the Namibian defense. Aboubakar’s goal came in the 65th minute, as he pounced on a rebound to slot the ball past the Namibian goalkeeper.

Meanwhile, Nigeria cruised to a 3-0 win over Benin in Uyo. Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen were the stars of the show for the Super Eagles. Lookman opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, while Osimhen added a spectacular goal in the 55th minute. Lookman sealed the deal with a third goal in the 78th minute.

In other news, Mauritania secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Botswana in Nouakchott. Sidi Amar scored the winning goal in the 84th minute, giving Mauritania a crucial three points in their opening match.

Matchday 2 of the AFCON 2025 qualifiers sees Gambia taking on Tunisia on September 8.
