CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup: A Weekend of Surprises

The CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup kicked off their 2024/25 campaigns with a bang as the first leg of the Preliminary Round served up a thrilling weekend of football across the continent.

The first Leg fixtures of both competitions ignited a brand-new CAF Interclub season on Friday, 16 August, with matches captivating fans throughout the continent.

The CAF Champions League, Africa’s premier club competition, saw Egyptian giants Pyramids FC make a statement of intent with a resounding 6-0 victory over Zanzibar’s JKU SCZ.  The result that has put the two-legged affair beyond reach for the islanders.

In another match that took place on an African island, Madagascar’s Disciples FC held former champions, Orlando Pirates to a goalless draw ahead of the return leg in Soweto next week.

The result will be a disappointment to the South Africans, who have set high hopes for themselves on the continent this season after bowing out of the competition in the preliminary stages in the last edition.

Other stand-out results of the weekend include Nigeria’s Remo Stars edging AS Far of Morocco 2-1 in a closely contested affair, while Malawi’s Nyasa Big Bullets overcame Red Arrows of Zambia by the same score-line.

There was equally as much entertainment in the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday with a southern African clash between Dynamos FC of Zimbabwe and Zambian powerhouse, Zesco United.

Despite both sides playing well, it was Dynamos who emerged 1-0 winners, setting up an appetizing return leg this coming weekend.

In Liberia, Paynesville FC made easy work of Cameroon’s Fovu De Baham with a comfortable 4 – 0 win.

Ghana’s Nsoatreman FC also cruised past their visitors from Chad with a 3-0 win over Elect Sport.

A four goal-thriller between Togo’s ASCK and Niger’s AS Fan saw both sides score twice in what was an evenly balanced encounter.

Despite creating a numerous of chances, both sides can credit their goalkeepers for keeping them in the contest, as the return leg promises to be yet another exciting tactical battle between the two sides.
