Borteyman Sports Complex: $145m facility turned into church venue

The $145 million Borteyman Sports Complex, completed just three months ago for the 2023 African Games, has now controversially hosted a church service.

In a viral video posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), attendees were seen conducting a church service inside one of the domes of the multi-purpose facility. The footage has sparked outrage online and raised concerns about the complex’s maintenance and intended use.

It has ben revealed that the service was organized by Christ Embassy-Legon Central without official permission.

According to sources, the University of Ghana Students Representative Council (SRC) and the church had initially sought approval from the National Sports Authority (NSA) for a student field trip to the facility, which has become a popular attraction since the African Games.

NSA officials were reportedly shocked to discover that the visit turned into a church service without their knowledge.

The incident, which occurred on June 1, 2024, prompted the SRC to issue an apology letter. The NSA has acknowledged the incident and is currently investigating.

The Borteyman Sports Complex boasts impressive facilities, including a 1,000-seat swimming pool, a multi-purpose sports hall with a 1,000-spectator capacity for basketball, badminton, netball, table tennis, and weightlifting. The complex also features a 500-seat temporary dome for handball, volleyball, judo, karate, taekwondo, arm-wrestling, and a five-court tennis complex.

As the investigation continues, the misuse of the Borteyman Sports Complex has sparked a wider debate on the proper management and utilization of such high-cost infrastructure.
