Black Stars to face Kwesi Appiah’s Sudan in AFCON 2025 qualifiers

The stage is set for an intriguing matchup as Ghana’s Black Stars prepare to face Sudan in the qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with Sudan now under the leadership of former Black Stars coach James Kwesi Appiah.

The draw, conducted in Johannesburg, South Africa on Thursday, July 4, placed Ghana in Group F alongside Sudan, Angola, and Niger.

For Ghana, who have faced challenges in recent AFCON outings, the draw presents an opportunity to redeem themselves.

The Black Stars, unable to progress past the group stage in their last two AFCON appearances, will be aiming to navigate a competitive group that includes familiar foes like Angola.

Angola, a team that proved formidable in the previous qualifiers for the 2023 AFCON, posed significant challenges for Ghana.

Despite a dramatic last-minute goal by AFC Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo securing Ghana’s qualification, a 1-1 draw in Luanda underscored the tough competition between the two sides.

In other key fixtures from the draw, Nigeria is set to face Benin in Group D, with both teams eyeing qualification not only for AFCON but also positioning for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Black Stars and Sudan with separate missions

As Sudan targets their 10th AFCON appearance, Ghana is determined to secure their 25th participation in the tournament and potentially clinch their fifth AFCON title. The Black Stars last lifted the trophy in 1982 and will be eager to make a strong statement under new challenges in Group F.

Football enthusiasts can anticipate a thrilling contest between Ghana and Sudan, marked by the reunion of James Kwesi Appiah with his former team, promising an encounter full of strategic intrigue and competitive spirit.
