Belgian striker Christian Benteke is determined to make his mark on Major League Soccer (MLS). Despite DC United’s disappointing 10th-placed Eastern Conference finish, Benteke’s 23 goals this season were a highlight. Inspired by the longevity of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, he aims to continue pushing his limits.
“Messi and Ronaldo are four or five years older than me and they still play, so who are we not to push ourselves?” Benteke told BBC Sport. “It’s not luck. It’s hard work. They look after their bodies, which is something we can all do.”
Benteke, who has extended his contract with DC United, embraces the relatively quieter lifestyle in Washington. He appreciates the opportunity to balance his professional commitments with family life.
“When you get older, you know it is your job and it’s what you have to do, to score goals and win games,” he said. “In the US you can train and as soon as your session is done, you can have a normal life… just to be a normal guy.”
While his international career with Belgium seems to be winding down, Benteke remains open to a potential return. “As long as I am playing, I will leave the door open,” he stated. However, with the next World Cup being hosted in the US, it seems unlikely that he will be part of the Belgian squad.
Benteke’s dedication and positive outlook make him a valuable asset to DC United. As he prepares for the 2025 MLS campaign, fans eagerly anticipate his contributions on the field.
