Asafa Powell to Aid Ghana's OlympiAfrica Project

Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) President Ben Nunoo Mensah has revealed that Jamaican Olympian Asafa Powell has pledged to support the OlympiAfrica project in Amasaman by helping to secure tartan tracks.

“This project demonstrates our commitment to developing sports infrastructure in Ghana,” said Mr. Nunoo Mensah. “We are working tirelessly to ensure athletes have access to world-class facilities.”

Mr. Nunoo Mensah also noted the personal connection, as Powell is married to a Ghanaian, Alyshia, who is the GOC President’s niece. The family is committed to supporting Ghanaian sports.

As of January 2025, the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has completed the first phase of the OlympiAfrica Project, featuring a combined basketball/volleyball court, a tennis court, and a standard football field with running tracks.

This first phase was funded by a $100,000 grant from the OlympiAfrica Foundation, with $79,161 spent to date on architectural designs, site preparation, and court construction.

Preparations for the second phase, which will include a multipurpose sports hall, are well underway.  The GOC is currently awaiting a building permit from the Ga North Municipal Assembly.

OlympiAfrica Director Alassane Diack has stated that the facility will primarily serve the Amasaman community, specifically children between the ages of 5 and 15.
