Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has expressed his delight in the signing of Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad.
The Gunners have secured the 28-year-old on a four-year contract with an option for a further 12 months, for a fee that could reach £31.6m.
Arteta believes that Merino’s experience and versatility will significantly enhance Arsenal’s squad. “Mikel is a player who will bring us huge quality with his experience and versatility,” the manager said. “He will make our squad significantly stronger, with his technical ability, together with his strong and positive character and personality.”
Merino’s recent success with the Spanish national team, including his winning goal in the Euro 2024 quarter-final against Germany, further highlights his quality. Arteta emphasized Merino’s winning mentality and his ability to complement Arsenal’s existing midfield options.
The new signing will provide Arteta with additional depth and competition in the middle of the park, alongside Declan Rice, Jorginho, Thomas Partey, and Martin Odegaard. Merino’s previous experience in the Premier League with Newcastle United will also be beneficial as he settles into his new surroundings.
With Merino’s arrival, Arsenal have strengthened their midfield options and are well-positioned for a successful season. The club will be looking to build on their positive start to the season, with their next match against Brighton on August 31.
