Ghana captain Andre Ayew has shared a significant career-defining moment stating that he has fond memories from the 2008 AFCON.
He revealed this at a lecture at the University of Ghana while addressing students during a lecture on sports psychology
Speaking under the guidance of Dr. Collins Agyemang Badu, Andre Ayew highlighted his participation in the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as one of the most impactful milestones in his career.
With an impressive track record of 120 appearances and 24 goals for Ghana, Ayew emphasized how the 2008 AFCON shaped his professional journey.
“This was one of the biggest moments in my life,” Ayew recalled. “When you are young, you have dreams, and in one moment your dreams are fulfilled, there is nothing better at that moment. Competing at the 2008 AFCON was a great moment.”
Ayew’s international career began when he was called up by coach Claude Le Roy for Ghana’s friendly match against Senegal on August 21, 2007, where he made his debut as a late substitute. His performance earned him a spot in the 2008 AFCON squad, announced on January 11, 2008.
During the lecture, Ayew discussed the crucial role of sports psychology in developing elite athletes, drawing from his personal experiences with the Black Stars. He stressed the importance of mental resilience in sports, stating, “It’s part of our sport, it’s part of the mental work. You’re human; sometimes you have to fall down deep, wake up, and go again.”
Ayew’s insights provided valuable lessons for aspiring athletes, highlighting the importance of perseverance and mental strength in achieving success.
