Ghanaian defender Alexander Djiku played a pivotal role for Fenerbahçe SK on Tuesday night as they overcame Lugano 2-1 in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League qualification round tie.
The match, held at Fenerbahçe’s home ground, saw the Turkish side come from behind to clinch a spot in the next round with a 6-4 aggregate victory.
Fenerbahçe, having won the first leg 4-3, faced an early setback when Lugano’s Mohamed Belhadi scored just seven minutes into the match.
Despite the early deficit, Fenerbahçe’s resilience shone through in the second half. Goals from Edin Dzeko and Sebastian Szymanski turned the game around, securing a 2-1 win on the night.
Djiku, who was a constant presence in defense, played the full 90 minutes and delivered a solid performance, contributing significantly to Fenerbahçe’s defensive efforts.
With this victory, Fenerbahçe advances to the next round of the UEFA Champions League qualification, where they will look to secure a spot in the group stage for the upcoming season.
Djiku and his teammates will need to maintain their form and continue their push for a place in Europe’s premier club competition.
