Ghana’s hopes of securing a vital win in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers were dealt a blow after they were held to a goalless draw by Sudan at the Accra Sports Stadium on Thursday, October 10.
Despite creating several chances, the Black Stars were unable to break through the solid Sudanese defense, leaving them third in Group F with just two points after three games.
The match was a must-win for Ghana following their lackluster start to the qualifiers, which included a home defeat to Angola and a 1-1 draw against Niger.
With pressure mounting, coach Otto Addo fielded a strong lineup. Mohammed Kudus, who was handed the captain’s armband, struggled to lead the team to a much-needed victory.

From the start, Ghana dominated possession and pressed high up the pitch, but Sudan’s resolute defending kept them at bay. The Black Stars had a few early opportunities, testing the Sudanese goalkeeper. However, their efforts were either saved or went wide of the target.
Sudan, led by Ghanaian coach Kwesi Appiah, remained compact and looked to counter whenever possible. Their defensive discipline frustrated the Black Stars, who often lacked precision in the final third.
Ghana’s struggles continue
With only two points from three matches, the Black Stars are in a precarious position in Group F, where Angola leads with six points and Sudan now sits second with four points. Niger, who have one point, are yet to play their match against Angola.
This result means Ghana must secure victories in their remaining matches, including the return leg against Sudan on Monday, October 14, in Libya, if they are to keep their qualification hopes alive.
