AFCON 2025 Qualifiers: South Africa Outshines Uganda to Claim Top Spot

South Africa cemented their position at the top of Group D in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers with a decisive 2-0 victory over Uganda on Friday. The win, secured on Ugandan soil, propels Bafana Bafana ahead of the Cranes, though both teams have already clinched their spots in the upcoming tournament in Morocco.

The match at the Nelson Mandela National Stadium in Kampala was a tale of two halves. A goalless first period, marked by cautious play from both sides, gave way to a more dynamic second half. Thapelo Morena broke the deadlock early in the second half with a composed finish, giving South Africa the lead. Despite Uganda’s efforts to equalize, the South African defense, anchored by experienced players, held firm. In the dying minutes of the match, Patrick Maswanganyi sealed the deal for South Africa, capitalizing on a well-timed pass to extend their lead.

Botswana’s Fight Continues

In Group C, Botswana’s hopes for AFCON qualification remain alive after a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Mauritania. The Lions of Chinguetti took the lead early on with a stunning long-range strike from Aboubakary Koïta. However, the Zebras responded quickly, equalizing through Gilbert Baruti following a well-executed set-piece. Despite Botswana’s relentless pressure in the second half, the scoreline remained unchanged.

While Egypt has already secured their place in the tournament, their final group match against Cape Verde will be crucial for determining the final standings in Group C. Botswana’s qualification hopes now hinge on the outcome of their final match and the result of the Egypt-Cape Verde encounter.
