George Afriyie urges GFA to retain Otto Addo despite AFCON qualifier struggles

Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), George Afriyie, has advised the current GFA administration to retain Black Stars coach Otto Addo, despite Ghana’s poor performances in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

This follows the Black Stars’ 2-0 defeat to Sudan, which has placed them on the brink of failing to qualify for the tournament in Morocco.

Ghana’s qualification hopes are now hanging by a thread, as the team has failed to win a single match after four games. Calls for the dismissal of Otto Addo have grown louder, but Afriyie believes the coach should be given more time to continue his project.

“I am not one of those who will say we have to sack Otto. We have to keep faith with him and make sure that he continues the process he has started because remember we still have the World Cup qualifiers,”George Afriyie told Asempa FM

Afriyie also emphasised the importance of long-term support for the coach, urging the GFA to let Addo learn from his experiences.

“We have to give him the needed support. Going forward in this AFCON [qualifiers], let’s accept that we are out and allow Otto to take his decisions and learn on the job as we move forward,” he added.

Currently, Ghana sits third in Group F with just two points. To qualify, the Black Stars must win their final two matches against Angola and Niger while hoping Sudan, who have seven points, slip up in their remaining games. Angola has already qualified, with Niger trailing at the bottom of the group.
