Former Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah has expressed mixed emotions following Sudan’s 2-0 victory over his native country in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Speaking after the match, Appiah acknowledged the significance of the result for Sudan, who have now moved into second place in Group F with seven points. “It’s unfortunate for Ghana,” he said. “They have a good team, but only one of us could go through. I’m happy we’ve been able to put a smile on Sudanese faces,” he added, emphasizing the importance of this victory for the nation.
The defeat has left Ghana on the brink of missing out on the AFCON for the first time in two decades. With just two points from four matches, the Black Stars must now win their remaining two qualifiers against Niger and Angola in November to have any chance of progressing.
Appiah’s comments highlight the complex emotions that come with coaching against one’s home country. While he undoubtedly feels pride for his Sudanese players, he must also be aware of the disappointment that this result will cause Ghanaian fans.
