Sudan stuns Ghana with 2-0 victory in AFCON 2025 Qualifiers

Sudan dealt a heavy blow to Ghana’s hopes of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), securing a commanding 2-0 victory in their Group F encounter on Tuesday afternoon.

The match, held at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Benghazi, Libya, saw Sudan, led by former Black Stars coach James Kwesi Appiah, outshine their opponents with a clinical second-half display.

The win extends Sudan’s strong form, with only one loss in their last eight competitive matches, keeping them firmly in contention for AFCON qualification.

Despite a quiet first half, where both teams struggled to create clear chances, Ghana’s goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi made a series of important saves to prevent Sudan from taking the lead.

However, Sudan’s persistence paid off in the second half. In the 62nd minute, Ahmed Mahmoud Al-Tash broke the deadlock, finding the back of the net after a goal-mouth scramble. Just three minutes later, Mohamed Abdelrahman added to the tally, expertly beating Ghana’s Mohammed Salisu and Ati-Zigi after receiving a precise pass from Ahmed Yousif.

The victory lifts Sudan to 7 points, just two points behind group leaders Angola, while Ghana remains winless with only 2 points from four matches, putting their qualification hopes in serious jeopardy.

Sudan’s well-deserved win leaves the Black Stars facing an uphill battle to secure a spot in the AFCON tournament in Morocco next year.
