GFA seeks new venue for Black Stars’ AFCON Qualifier after Baba Yara Stadium ban

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is actively searching for an alternative venue to host the Black Stars’ upcoming matchday three Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Sudan.

This follows the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) decision to withdraw approval for the Baba Yara Stadium, citing multiple technical infractions, including an unsuitable playing surface.

The stadium was banned by CAF on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, after failing to meet required standards. With the Baba Yara Stadium now closed for refurbishment, the GFA is considering alternative options for the Black Stars’ crucial home fixture.

Ivory Coast’s Félix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium, which hosted two of Ghana’s games during the recent AFCON tournament, is one potential venue. However, its availability will need to be confirmed before it can be used. Additionally, the GFA may also explore venues in Benin or Togo, pending CAF approval.

The state of the Baba Yara Stadium’s pitch drew criticism during Ghana’s last AFCON qualifier against Angola, with both teams expressing concerns. The Angolan coach even stated that “a country like Ghana deserves a better pitch.”

The Black Stars will face Sudan in a two-legged tie in October as they continue their quest to qualify for the 2025 AFCON.
