Ghana's Rose Yeboah Among Honorees at WISA Awards 2024

Ghanaian athletes Rose Amoanimaa Yeboah, Cynthia Mensah, and Nasaara Quansah, who represent the country in Track & Field, are among 32 distinguished personalities and organizations set to be honoured at the 10th Women In Sports Association (WISA) Awards.

The event, taking place on September 21,2024 at the Accra Sports Stadium, celebrates outstanding contributions to women’s sports.

Perpetual Naa Ayikailey Okaijah, who won a gold medal for Ghana in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) at the 13th African Games in Accra 2023, is among the honorees. Handball star Vida Baffowaa, hockey players Lawrentia Okine from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), and SCO Hagar Laryea from the Ghana Prisons Service will also be recognized. International fencer Kelsey Woname is being celebrated for her contributions to the sport as well.

Several media professionals promoting women’s sports will be honoured as well. These include female journalists Aniela Allotey (TV3), Doreen Lamptey (Obonu TV & GTV Sports), Naa Deide Sampah (HSTV), and Awurabena Adzi (HSTV).

Male journalists Sammy Heywood Okine of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), African Sports Media and Omashi TV, Max TV’s Prince Annang, GTV’s Theophilus Sampah and John Phil Quartey of Metro TV will also be honoured.

Astute sports supporters Rashida Iddi and Abigail Twumasiwaa Okantah are also among the honorees. Distinguished personalities such as DDG Mrs. Patience Baffoe Bonnie and Captain Andy Sam of Aspire Soccer will also be recognized.

Ms. Betty Dzimah, secretary to the Director General, and Thomas Kumordzi of National Sports Authority (NSA) are set to receive awards as well. Additionally, some members of the Trinity Church will be honoured.

Madam Gloria Commodore, President of the Women In Sports Association (WISA), revealed that this may be the last edition of the WISA Awards. . She explained that the lack of support from corporate Ghana and the rising expenses have made organizing the event increasingly difficult. However, she stated that if a company steps in to sponsor the event, she would be willing to hand over the responsibility.
