Ghana’s U-20 Women’s National Team, also known as the Black Princesses, are poised for their opening match of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia. Their opening match will see them face off against Austria on Monday night.
The Black Princesses arrived in Colombia on August 14th, allowing ample time for acclimatization and meticulous preparation for the tournament. Basigi’s squad has benefitted from two crucial pre-tournament friendlies, drawing 0-0 against South Korea and 2-2 against Mexico. These matches provided valuable experience for the young players, who are determined to build upon their success at the African Games earlier this year, where they clinched the gold medal.

“The players are match ready because this is what they have been waiting for and the time has come,” Basigi declared emphatically. He further emphasized the importance of a prepared coaching staff, stating, “Looking at the enthusiasm amongst the technical staff, they are also ready because the players are looking up to us. We must be match ready since they look up to us, and if we are not match ready, it affects the players.”
While the Black Princesses boast a formidable reputation, they have yet to progress beyond the group stage in their six previous World Cup appearances. Basigi and his team are determined to rewrite history, and they view a strong performance against Austria as a crucial step towards achieving this goal.
With a blend of experience from the African Games, valuable pre-tournament matches, and unwavering focus, the Black Princesses are aiming to break their group stage curse and make a significant mark on the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia.
