Vincent Kompany Hails Bayern Munich's Winning Mentality in Bundesliga Debut

Former Burnley manager Vincent Kompany enjoyed a successful start to his Bundesliga career as Bayern Munich defeated Wolfsburg 3-2 in their opening match of the season.

The Belgian tactician joined Bayern this summer after replacing Thomas Tuchel, who was dismissed following a disappointing 2023/24 season.

Jamal Musiala gave Bayern an early lead in the 20th minute, but Wolfsburg fought back with goals from Lovro Majer in the 47th and 55th minutes. However, an own goal by Jakub Kaminski in the 65th leveled the scores at 2-2. Serge Gnabry ultimately secured the win for Bayern in the 82nd minute.

Kompany expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, particularly in the first half. “The first half was dominant, as it should be,” he said. “We didn’t concede any chances.” However, he acknowledged that the team struggled to maintain their momentum in the second half, conceding two quick goals.

Despite the setbacks, Kompany praised his players’ mentality and determination. “The third point is that our mentality was right at the end, and that’s why we won the game,” he said. “Mistakes happen, the important thing is how the team reacts. That took a while in the second half.”

Vincent Kompany also credited substitutes Thomas Müller and Kingsley Coman for their impact on the game. “Thomas Müller and Kingsley Coman came in with the right mentality and the tempo came back,” he said. “At the end of the second half, we had a lot of courage to win the game.”

While acknowledging that the performance was not perfect, Kompany remains optimistic about Bayern’s prospects for the season. “It wasn’t perfect, but we’ll keep going,” he concluded.

As Bayern look ahead to the rest of the season, Kompany will be hoping to build on this victory and establish his team as a force to be reckoned with in the Bundesliga. Their next league match is against SC Freiburg at the Allianz Arena on September 1.
