Ghana government plans to build international standard stadiums in each region – Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif

Minister for Youth and Sports Mustapha Ussif has unveiled an ambitious plan to construct an internationally accepted stadium in every region of Ghana.

This announcement was made during Ussif’s appearance before the Public Accounts Committee earlier this week.

Currently, only the Baba Yara Sports Stadium and Accra Sports Stadium are equipped to host international matches, though they too face limitations for certain categories of games.

Ussif emphasised the government’s commitment to improving sports infrastructure nationwide, stating, “The government policy is to ensure that every region in Ghana has a modern, internationally accepted stadium. We are making sure that we are working on the regions that do not have those facilities.”

This plan comes amidst growing concerns about the readiness of the Baba Yara Stadium for Ghana’s upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Angola. The stadium, recently used for a large church event, has been criticized for its deteriorating condition, raising doubts about its suitability for high-profile matches.

Mustapha Ussif assured that funding arrangements are being actively pursued, with the goal of completing these facilities as soon as possible. He noted, “As and when we get funds and funding arrangements are put in place, you will see us in those regions to make sure that they are completed.”

In addition to the new stadium plans, the NPP government has built approximately 150 AstroTurfs since taking office. However, many of these facilities are reportedly inadequate for hosting even Ghana Premier League games.

The government’s initiative aims to enhance the quality of sports infrastructure across the country, ensuring that all regions benefit from state-of-the-art facilities that meet international standards.
